Richard Garcia is a Jeet Kune Do teacher, and has trained in the art for many years from some of the top original Bruce Lee students in the world, spanning all the era's of JKD development including: (The Seattle era, the Oakland era, the L.A. Original Chinatown branch and the L.A. Concepts branch), giving Mr. Garcia a broad view what Lee taught during his life-time as well as the development of Jeet Kune Do after his passing.
Mr. Garcia has been ranked a full instructor in Jeet Kune Do and the Filipino Martial Arts.
In addition to Jeet Kune Do, Garcia holds black belts in Shotokan Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and has extensive grappling knowledge.
In 2002 Mr. Garcia was ranked 4th in the world in fighting in the NASKA organization in the Men's lightweight division and has fought in Ireland, London, as well as all over the U.S.
In 2003 Mr. Garcia opened his first school Ultimate Karate USA a school that taught traditional karate as well as offering JKD classes to the top fighters in the school. Ultimate Karate quickly gained a reputation for turning out fierce fighters who fought in MMA, Kickboxing, and Vale Tudo Fighting. Some of his fighters have been covered in the New York Times, Daily News, and the Wall Street Journal for their ferocity in New York Cities underground fight circuit.
In 2006 Garcia received the Ron Herring "Mission Of Service Award" from the Mankind Project as well as the the World Learning Forum's "Teaching Innovator of the year" award in 2007.
In 2008 Mr. Garcia was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden by the Great Aaron Banks as "Sifu of the Year" for his work in teaching JKD to inner city youth in Spanish Harlem.
In 2010 Mr. Garcia formed The Garcia Gung Fu Institute as a new direction from Ultimate Karate USA where he would focus on teaching JKD exclusively concentrating not only on fighting but expanding the spiritual and mental aspects thus helping students develop "self actualization" through Zen Philosophy where JKD is the vehicle for personal growth.
Now in its second location in Spanish Harlem New York City, Garcia Gung Fu is quickly becoming one of the most renown Jeet Kune Do gym's in the country.
Mr. Garcia is dedicated to teaching the art the way it was meant to be "non-politically, and non-classically".
